GuitarTricks Review

guitar tricksGuitarTricks has been offering online guitar lessons longer then any other site on the web (started in 1998). While they may not have all the bells and whistles some of the other guitar courses offer their core lesson content is fantastic and they have a line up of practice tools that get the job done.

What we Liked about the Course

First off, like JamPlay, Guitar Tricks offers guitar lessons not just for beginners but also for intermediate players in rock, country and blues. If you’re currently a beginner then there is a very straight forward lesson plan you can follow to learn the basics then advance on to your preferred style as an intermediate player.

All of the lesson videos are fast loading and suitable for most types of Internet connections which makes the site more enjoyable to use.

Great Fundamentals Lessons

I feel that of all guitar courses Guitar Tricks does the best job of explaining their teach style and lesson plan. They have created two beginner courses entitled: Guitar Fundamentals 1 and Guitar Fundamentals 2. Once you complete these two core series of lessons you move onto your choice of intermediate lessons on the blues, rock or country.

Great Support Forum and Community

There’s a very busy private members forum inside the membership where you can ask questions, get answers and meet fellow students who are going through the same lessons as you.

Like other online guitar courses GuitarTricks has a variety of instructors to choose from. This means that you’re always learning from an expert no matter what skill level or style you’re taking.

What we Didn’t Like about the Course

Like JamPlay one of the biggest downfalls of GuitarTricks is that you must watch your lessons on the computer. While Guitar Tricks videos load quickly still not everyone is going to want to use their computer to watch lessons. If you’d prefer a DVD guitar course check out Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar.

Some older Videos

The other downfall to Guitar Tricks is that some of the lesson videos are older. Since they got their start in 1998 some of the lesson content was filmed before HD video cameras got so cheap. While they are adding new content every week you’ll still come across a few videos that look a little old school This isn’t to say the instruction isn’t good, just the video isn’t as crisp as it could be.

Conclusion

Over all I really like Guitar Tricks. They don’t offer as many style specific lessons as JamPlay, nor do they have daily live webcam sessions but they’re also five bucks cheaper each month. It’s really a flip of the coin with which online guitar course you choose.
